Why did you decide to apply to study medicine overseas and why at the Philotimo Med Abroad Programs in Greece?

Applying to study Medicine overseas wasn’t always on my agenda. It was only when I researched a variety of Medical Programs overseas that I realized the opportunities associated with studying Medicine abroad.

Having been on holiday to Greece each summer for over a decade, it was high on my priority list. The Philotimo Med Abroad Fellowship Program at the University of Thessaly in Larissa offered a course that would enable me to practice in the States.

What is your favorite thing about studying medicine abroad and why?

Studying Medicine in Larissa, Greece has allowed me to broaden my horizons. Not only academically, with the incorporation of the USMLE into the program, but also socially.

I have met friends from all parts of the world, and have been able to use my holidays to travel, and explore other cultures. Although clichéd, leaving New York has enabled me to open my eyes to the world, realizing that other ways of life have so much to offer.

What are your tips for students applying to study medicine abroad?

Studying abroad can bring difficulties, so creating a great support network is incredibly important. My main piece of advice would be to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace the culture in which you live, and appreciate what is around you. It is an opportunity of a lifetime.

Do you think you will return to the USA to practice Medicine or will you stay overseas?

At the moment my aim is to return to the US for the two foundation years. Depending on the score I achieve in the USMLE, I may decide to specialize in the USA. Another option would be to look at Canada for specialty, which is becoming increasingly popular with junior doctors.

What three things do you think other students would love to know about studying Medicine at the Philotimo Med Abroad Program and at the University of Thessaly, and University Hospital?

The CEO, the Professors, and the lecturers are really supportive.

Many of the lecturers are Doctors, providing firsthand clinical experience and knowledge.
