The Philotimo Med Abroad Medical Internship Program is headquartered in the state of New Jersey, and is operated in Larissa, Greece the program is operated by the Faculty of Medicine School of Health and Sciences of the University of Thessaly and the University Hospital of Larissa.
This program provides pre-health students with hands-on training in a collaborative, team-based environment. The academic portion of the internship offers opportunities to apply newly acquired skills and enhance their professional growth, allowing pre-health students to pursue a career in the medical industry
The Internship Program
Philotimo’s Clinical Shadowing program offers an intercultural experience that medical schools are actively seeking. The program takes place over 2-4 weeks during academic breaks in leading hospitals in Greece. During this time, students can witness a wider range of healthcare procedures and intercultural settings.
Life-Changing Experiences Made Accessible As a busy pre-health student, trying to coordinate a few shadowing hours here and there with local doctors is difficult and not always rewarding. Completing your shadowing hours during the break is the most efficient option, and it allows you to focus on grades and test prep during the semester. We manage all the logistics and scheduling with the doctors, so that you can focus on the experience itself.
Clinical Shadowing Internship Program with Philotimo Med.
Hospital Experience
Philotimo Med Abroad provides an opportunity for students to shadow medical professionals for more than 25 hours per week in diverse clinics. All of our programs are observation-only and abide by the ethical guidelines of the AAMC.
Our students typically shadow from Monday to Thursday, having a six-hour shift, starting at 9:00 am and ending at 3:00 pm.
We guarantee specialty preferences based on the candidate’s resume and questionnaire.
Philotimo Med Abroad’s locations are rich in the cultural offerings of Greece, allowing students to immerse themselves in the local culture while pursuing their medical education.
Programs are conducted in English
English is spoken throughout the hospital. We always encourage students to practice some Greek helpful phrases in the months leading up to their program, but regardless, you’ll be very much outside your comfort zone. In the long run, you will be better able to relate to patients because you’re known what is to be an outsider in a foreign healthcare system.

Health Precaution
To ensure safety during student shadowing at hospitals, Philotimo takes necessary precautions. Students must submit their vaccination records and COVID-19 certificate. Some hospitals may require additional measures. We also provide travel and health insurance plans that cover medical expenses, including COVID-19.
Please also be sure that you let us know of any type of allergies or any unusual health issues and inform our team of them during the pre-departure process.

PRE-DEPARTURE
As you get ready for your program, our Program Director will ensure that you are well-informed and at ease with what to expect.
Your Program Director will be your primary contact person for travel arrangements, vaccination records, and any payment-related queries. You will receive all the necessary details about the hospital shadowing location, Program Coordinator, program housing address, and arrival day logistics no later than two weeks before the program start date.
Arrival
Our staff has successfully ensured the safe arrival of our students at their destination airports and housing locations. We suggest that students aim to arrive at their housing site in the early afternoon on the start date of their programs. If they need to take a train or bus from the airport to their housing, they should keep in mind that they need to arrive before 5 pm local time. This information should be considered when booking flights.
