What are the benefits of a dental internship abroad?

There are several benefits to completing a dental internship for college students or high schoolers. You’ll get the experience you need to prepare yourself for the next stage in your education and career. It’s an exciting and different way to develop your skills and knowledge.

You can also expect to:

  • Improve global competencies such as communication, organization, planning, teamwork, time management, leadership, and resilience
  • Observe oral conditions and treatment methods you might not encounter at home
  • Get a more in-depth dental shadowing experience compared to your home country
  • Learn to work and empathize with people from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Improved self-confidence as you broaden your horizons

The Shadowing Experience

The actual shadowing experience is the core of the program. It typically involves orientation and introductions, observing dental procedures, engaging with patients, and reflecting on the experience.

Orientation and introductions familiarize participants with the dental setting, including the clinic or hospital facilities, various departments, and key personnel. Meeting preceptors and staff members establishes a supportive network.

Observing dental procedures allows participants to witness the intricacies of patient care. From routine check-ups to complex treatments, this hands-on experience provides a real-world understanding of dental practice. Interacting with dental professionals during rounds, conferences, and informal discussions further enriches the learning experience.

Engaging with patients is a vital aspect of dental shadowing. Participants learn the significance of effective chairside manner, empathy, and communication in dental settings. Assisting with patient care activities, under supervision, offers practical involvement in the dental team and fosters teamwork skills.

Reflecting on the experience through journaling and discussions with preceptors and fellow participants encourages deep learning and self-improvement. It provides an opportunity to share insights, challenges, and personal growth, enhancing the overall learning experience.
