Med/PA Schools Value Breadth

If every pre-health student in the U.S. read this, we’d see less stress, more clarity about their career path, and ultimately, more passionate, well-prepared healthcare professionals. It’s worth your time!

Why Clinical Experience Matters

Medical and PA schools emphasize the breadth of clinical experience. At Philotimo Med Abroad, we expose students to multiple specialties and doctors, giving them a well-rounded view of healthcare. Unlike traditional shadowing, which usually focuses on a single specialty, our program rotates participants through different areas of medicine each week, providing them with a broader understanding of the field.

Whether you’re pursuing medicine, dentistry, nursing, or another healthcare path, we can help you gain essential, diverse experiences that set you apart.

Is a Career in Healthcare Right for You?

Here are a few traits you should have if you’re thinking about a healthcare career:

  1. Intellectual Curiosity in Science
Healthcare careers vary in their scientific demands, but a strong foundation in science is crucial.

  2. A Desire to Help People
You need a genuine interest in people and their well-being, with a service-oriented mindset proven through civic engagement or volunteerism.

  3. Teamwork Skills
Healthcare is collaborative. You’ll need to work well with diverse colleagues and patients.

  4. A Realistic Understanding of Healthcare
It’s essential to understand both the rewards and challenges of your career choice. Shadowing, reading, and firsthand experience will give you insight into what daily life in healthcare looks like.

  5. Comfort in Patient-Facing Settings
Interacting with patients starts early. Med schools may introduce you to patients within your first week, so gaining confidence through volunteering or clinical work is crucial.

Preparing for Health Professions School

Preparation starts well before you apply. By actively engaging in classes, building relationships with faculty, and participating in meaningful activities, you’ll make sure you’re fully committed and ready for this path. The application process typically begins two years before you aim to start school. Here’s an overview of the key steps:

Year 1: Preparation and Reflection

  • October-December
Attend workshops, read the handbook, and submit your applicant intake form.
  • January-April
Request letters of recommendation, finalize your pre-application materials, and attend relevant workshops.
  • May
Take the MCAT or DAT and prepare your primary application.

Year 2: The Application Process

  • June-August
Submit your primary application, complete secondary applications, and prepare for interviews.
  • August-March
Attend interviews while staying engaged in activities and sending updates to schools.
  • October-April
Keep track of acceptances and finalize your decision by April 30.

Standardized Tests: What to Expect

MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test)
The MCAT is about 7.5 hours long and covers science and non-science topics across four sections.

DAT (Dental Admissions Test)
The DAT is a 5-hour test with four sections: natural sciences, perceptual ability, reading comprehension, and quantitative reasoning.

Co-Curricular Preparation

While academic success is critical, your extracurricular activities matter too. Explore opportunities through Philotimo Med Abroad and find experiences that resonate with your passion for healthcare.

However, remember: you are a student first. Heavy involvement in activities at the expense of academics can hurt your chances.

How to Gain Clinical Experience with Philotimo Med Abroad

  • Volunteer in hospitals or clinics during your school break
  • Pursue internships, including international opportunities
  • Shadow healthcare professionals in our private and public hospitals
  • Work on clinical trials as a research assistant
