The Philotimo Med Abroad Clinical Shadowing and Medical Internship Program, as well as volunteering programs, are headquartered in the state of New Jersey. The program is operated in Larissa, Greece, and is run by the Faculty of Medicine School of Health and Sciences of the University of Thessaly, Larissa’s University Hospital, and the Iaso General Hospital.
This medical program provides pre-health students with hands-on training in a collaborative, team-based environment. The academic portion of the internship offers opportunities to apply newly acquired skills and enhance professional growth, allowing pre-health students to pursue a career in the medical industry.
Philotimo’s Clinical Shadowing program offers an intercultural experience that medical schools are actively seeking. The program takes place over 2-4 weeks during academic breaks in leading hospitals in Greece. During this time, students can witness a wider range of healthcare procedures and intercultural settings.
At Philotimo Med Abroad, students have the unique opportunity to shadow medical professionals for over 25 hours per week in a variety of clinics. Our programs strictly adhere to the ethical guidelines of the AAMC and focus on observation-only experiences.
Students typically shadow from Monday to Friday, working six-hour shifts from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. We prioritize specialty preferences based on each candidate’s resume and questionnaire, ensuring a tailored experience for every participant.
Our program locations offer rich cultural experiences in Greece, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in the local culture while pursuing their medical education.
English is spoken throughout the hospital. We always encourage students to practice some Greek helpful phrases in the months leading up to their program, but regardless, you’ll be very much outside your comfort zone. In the long run, you will be better able to relate to patients because you’re known what is to be an outsider in a foreign healthcare system.

To ensure safety during student shadowing at hospitals, Philotimo takes necessary precautions. Students must submit their vaccination records and COVID-19 certificate. Some hospitals may require additional measures. We also provide travel and health insurance plans that cover medical expenses, including COVID-19.
